Really embarrassed, but not surprised, to know about this experience of yours. The government has sort of lost control on that part.

Same thing in America. Prostitution is illegal in 49 states except Nevada, but you know that is a hugh business luring customers all over the states. In China, it is just even less controlled.

  2. Come to Holland, prostitution is legal and organized, cocaine and “soft drug” are served on fine restaurant table, you can marry your gay boyfriend in court, and you are allowed to ask the doc to kill yourself if you think they can not help your illness. 🙂

  3. Oh, come on: it was clearly just a wrong number. Prostitution doesn’t exist in this country, dind’t you hear? So the girl in question muse clearly have been mistaken. At midnight. In a hotel.

Actually, I enjoy spinning the various entreaties, because it all basically adds up – if we assume, as per the government’s assertion, that there is no prostitution in this liberated country – to me being ridiculously hot.

  4. (Oh, wow, typos galore. Look, it’s 4 in the morning on a Saturday: the typos were clearly caused by the Demon Rum.)

  5. And the Demon Rum was the only thing that made it funny.

  6. First time here for visiting. It surprised me that you did really good in Chinese and your website (weblog) design as well. Btw, I am glad to hear that you live in Shanghai. Hopefully we have chance to meet there when I make my trip back to Shanghai next year.

And then he took the phone off the hook. Beside the bed on the night table was a price list for “massages” and two packs of 避孕套。 她说“the highest priced one, for 200 RMB, says it’ll make you fly” All of us had a good laugh at that…

  9. Hi there, I think you’ve been to a hotel that’s not equipped with ‘stars’. I did have a same experience with you in SiChuan, but my exp is more horrible: someone out there knock my door to ask for my acceptance at mid night. And so I went to the counter next morning to ask the staff why those hookers knew the room is occupied. And the answer is ‘We hv made an alliance w/ those hookers…….’ See?
But I assure no similar case will be happened if you living in those 3-5 stars hotels!!

N.B. I came from Hong Kong. Nice to meet you. Your Chinese is quite well

  10. Hi,there. Your Chinese is Quite well. I had some same experience with you in Fujian and Guangdong. Those things are turn-off for me.

I am glad to hear that you live in Hangzhou. I live in Taizhou. Taizhou is a coastal city in Zhejiang province. From an administrative standpoint, Taizhou is more than just a city. The local government covers four surrounding counties, plus the two mid-sized cities of Linhai and Wenling. All in all, the administrative area of Taizhou covers some 9,400 square km and has a population of 5.5 million.I know you have been to Linhai. Welcome to Taizhou.

I used to do some business in Guangdong back in the mid 90’s and spent some time at hotels around Zhongshan and Dongguan. If I didn’t get a call or a knock on the door from a young 小姐 I was very surprised. Once, a girl knocked on the door while I was talking on the phone to my girlfriend (future wife). I told the 小姐 I was on the phone with my girfirend. She said, “No problem, I can wait.” I had heard stories that the hotels and the local security had a shakedown racket going on. Get some foreiner or HK businessman to accept the offer of service. Security comes into the room and then “advises” the poor sap to paying extortion money in exchange for hushing up the “crime”. Glad to see that the practice has made it’s way up north. Enjoy your blog. Keep up the good work!

  13. Three years ago I had the same thing happen in a four-star hotel in Beijing. I didn’t know enough Chinese to understand the phone call, but in the intervening years I’ve put together what the woman said and realized she was trying to, er, hook me up. It’s not always rat-traps that offer such “服务” 🙂

Great Greetings….
