Chinese Green Cards?

I’m still in Hubei on business. I’ve been here for almost a week. Despite all the warnings I got that Hubei (and especially Wuhan, which I haven’t been to yet) is like an oven, it’s been refreshingly cool the whole time I’ve been here. It’s because of the rain (typhoon?), I guess. It’s been a great break from Shanghai’s muggy heat.

I am still looking for a teacher trainer, but I’m having a lot of trouble accessing my e-mail from Hubei, so it’ll be a few more days before I can reply to e-mails about that.

Although I’m pretty much aloof regarding world events right now, I do know that the USA has finally caught up to China in number of Olympic gold medals. The Chinese are watching very closely.

Today some teachers here in Hubei pointed out to me an interesting CCTV headline:

China Formally Commences a Permanent Residence Green Card System for Foreigners

This is definitely an interesting development for some of us here in China. I’ll have to read up on this more when I get back to Shanghai.

  1. Yeah.. Ihave been here married for almost 3 years with a kid…. It wouldbe nice to be treated as more than a tourist. Id like to hear if anyone got one… And is it only for residency or does it include working permmission?/

  2. I wrote up a comment, but it got too long so I made it a weblog entry. The gist of it is that these rules were made for two reasons: 1) to formalize the process of granting long term residency in line with China’s march towards the rule of law, and 2) to attract foreign talent, investment and technology to China. Judge for yourself if you’re in one those three latter groups. The full text of the new law is on the Ministry of Public Security’s web site.

  3. I worked on a translation to do with this recently (not of the actual law). Basically, I don’t think it’s anything to get excited about – you need to be very high up in a joint venture, a big investor or have made ‘outstanding contributions to China’. Oh, and if you are dependant on someone in China.

If I’m correct, it’s the actual implementation of something that has been ‘draft’ for a while.

  10. Only 10 comments in thisw issue? If any one knows a good forum where people are talking about this let me know please by posting a link here…

  11. RE: Americans living abroad, I’ve posted instructions for applying for an absentee ballot in the upcoming Presidential election. Don’t let this wait too long- be counted! The link is here.

  12. Robert – Why don’t you just stop by your local PSB and ask for an application? As Micah wrote above, these green cards are only likely to be given to “important” people. I don’t see how it matters too much, though, as getting a new visa once a year is trivial.

  13. getting a visa once a year trivial?!?!

You have a kid wife, and lived here for 3 years,

and recieved xontanttmporary residence permit for forigners?

You ever get contracts where emplyers hold your working vusa as leverage against paying you as contracted, like a form of blackmail?

Compared to once living in Germany for 6 years with my ex-german wife, Getting a chinese visa is far from trivial.

Getting a residence permit once a year..
    hahah

After three years I got my first year long residence permit in China… 4 months was the norm.

No Chinese visas are a pain in the ass.

Im waiting for the exact translation.

Im waiting for other people to go to their local psbs…

Mine is not the most antixenophobic .

  14. I received a residence permit within a few weeks of arriving in China, and it was probably 4 months as well. Now that I’ve been here for two years, I’ve had my documents renewed several times and it’s never been a hassle. In fact, my visa expires next month, and we’ll do the same thing we did last time — someone will come pick up my paperwork and return it a week later with extended dates.

Yes, trivial. If my employer didn’t provide me with a visa, residence permit, and work permit, I wouldn’t work for them. If they blackmailed me when it came to renewal time, I’d certainly quit.

  15. Robert and Brad, where are you guys? I’ve never had any trouble getting a 1 year residence permit. Never. Not in Changsha, Taiyuan or Beijing. And Robert, if your employer is such an arsehole, might I suggest quitting and finding a new job. Most employers here do not treat their foreign staff that way.

Brad, I agree, visas are a very trivial matter for us foreigners. Although I suspect for our employers there’s a bit more paper work involved, but that’s their problem.

  16. Sounds nice and Rosey to me. Living in Hubei and Nanning I had completely opposite experiances, along with most expats I know here With some exceptions. With 90 percents of the schools in was a pain in the ….

After three years I finally got a job who made the process painless…

Why dont I quit? Because its how almost every school is. Just part of the process.

Thank god I finally got a good school. And my first forign expert certificate, although it was promised and used to lure me by almost everyschool I worked at.

I would like to have a green card though. Most countries issue them to spouses of citizens.

  17. Hi, can someone please help with regards to applying for a work permit in Shanghai? I wish to apply for IBM in Shanghai but I need to be able to work in SH before I can apply. Thanks a lot.
