Thank you, Andy Lau (刘德华), for one of the funniest Chinese music videos I have ever seen. Greg and I witnessed this amazing recording of a live concert while lunching at the “Kowloon Ice House” in Zhongshan Park’s “Cloud Nine” (龙之梦) mall. A search on YouTube turned up nothing, but thankfully the Tudou.com results had a clip of the exact video we watched:
For those of you too lazy or too foolish to watch that clip, let me recap the hilarity contained therein:
1. Andy Lau is wearing a white cowboy hat and a wifebeater-blouse.
2. The song is a Cantonese version of “I Hate Myself for Loving You” called 我恨我痴心 (literally, “I Hate My Infatuation”).
Well, that’s all, really. It’s funny.
Oh, and just in case you need it, there’s also a karaoke version of 我恨我痴心 set to random boy/girl scenes that have absolutely nothing to do with the song.
John, thank you so much for posting this. This is fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. Andy Lau is truly a national treasure.
The funny thing is he’s not even gay (at least not as far as I know), maybe this is the Chinese version of metrosexual.

Love the wife beater. At least if the whole “Britney” thing doesn’t work out, it’s nice to know that Kevin Federline would have a potential career as “Cantopop Music Video Director.”
I first read “wifebeater” and thought, cool. Then on a zoom in during the video, I saw the “blouse” and it nearly burned holes in my eyes.
But then, I thought, Hong Kong Singer, no wonder – you gotta know your audience and that means “wifebeater-blouse”, “white cowboy hat” and skinny-ass arms and a body like a 15-year-old-boy. Hong Kong, go figure.
Yeah, Andy’s a hoot! Love those white “roach killer” boots too. With all those frills and since it is a blouse, does that make it a husband beater blouse?
That is so damn funny. I never quite knew what to think of the Cantopop juggernaut taking western rock and pop songs and making them Hong Kong style. It’s so campy, it is good kind of thing.
Andy plays badasses in movies like “House of Flying Daggers” and “Infernal Affairs” (plug here to go and see “The Departed”, it kicks ass), but has to dress up in frilly wifebeaters for concerts. What gives? Must be the price to pay being a celeb in HK. BTW, is that a wife beater or a same sex partner beater?
“I Hate My Infatuation”. Sounds like a song about a self-loathing narcissist. What must Joan Jett be thinking?
If I had Andy Lau’s rodent-like body, I wouldn’t be showcasing it in a wifebeater shirt or blouse (wait, I DO have Lau’s body!). The funny thing is Lau must’ve missed a few weight-lifting sessions. He was MUCH buffer in “Days of Being Wild”–check out the scene where he’s in a wifebeater with Leslie Cheung in that crappy Filipino hotel. (But there must be something about Lau. When my mom saw “Infernal Affairs,” she was all rhapsodizing about how handsome he was. Like WTF?!)

“The Departed” was pretty good but probably the most overrated movie this year. The plot wandered like a wino after a two-day binge, and the woman having dual relationships with both men is SO contrived. The ending was a total cop-out, and Matt Damon’s character was waayyyy more simplistic than Andy Lau’s. I can’t say which I enjoyed more, though–the original or “Departed.” However, DiCaprio–wow, what a performance! And Nicholson wasn’t too shabby either. They both deserve Oscars.
What would “The Duke” (John Wayne) say if he saw this?

I agree with you on the plot being hard to follow, but Scorsese might have been using it as a device to have the viewer be as confused about the roles of the “rats” as the “rats” were themselves. I thought Damon did a pretty good job too. Would like to see Damon, DiCaprio and Nicholson all get Oscar nods. At least give Scorsese the Oscar for best director and get it over with already.

Awesome video. Keeping things off-topic, I haven’t seen the Departed yet, but I got a kick out of buying a pirated copy at the subway in Beijing by asking the seller if they had the 美国版 of 无间道.
does anyone else think his jeans look like they might be ACID WASHED?? wow, didn’t know you could still get those….
