Firefox 3 + Gladder

The Chinese internet has been all kinds of slow lately. Foreign sites load extremely sluggishly, and I can’t upload to Flickr at all.

Enter Firefox 3! The Chinese internet is still damn slow, but at least the browser is faster! Gmail works dramatically faster.

The one problem with upgrading immediately is that many Firefox addons might not be up to date and no longer work. Actually, though, most of these plugins can be forced to work by editing the compatible version range in the XPI file. Since I’ve started using Gladder as my proxy tool of choice, I can’t live without it. I figure some of you may be in the same boat, so I’m sharing my unofficial, hacked Gladder XPI file:

Gladder 2.0.2.1: unofficial hack for Firefox 3.0

I imagine this is not really a good thing to do, so use only at your own risk. (I just want Wikipedia back.)

Thanks to John B for showing me how to do this.

  1. Thanks! I have the feeling we’re going to be seeing a lot of these hacked extensions in the coming weeks. I’m using:

Firefox 3 + SSH tunnel through Dreamhost + hacked Switchproxy addon

  2. I’m getting by on Firefox version 2.0 for the time being.

Cool. This was the one plugin I didn’t want to do without.

  4. […] 安装firefox3.0后,许多原来的扩展都不支持了,包括我最钟爱的gladder。在网上找了好久才找到支持的办法,方法如下: […]

  5. thanks,I can get Wikipedia again.

  6. but wikipedia has not been blocked for a while now…. at least here in Tianjin!

  7. English Wikipedia has been open for a while.

The Chinese version is still blocked, but I’m sure you have worked out how to use a proxy to get there.

  8. You are the best!!

    I LOVE the T-shirt BTW…

  9. Thank you so much John and it works without problem

  10. Guess I better go download it. My computer is slow and I could use something that at least goes slightly faster.

  11. I think you don’t need to change the plugin. You can just force your browser to ignore the version check…

Much easier (untill the developers update their own version)

  12. 我都是用Nightly Tester Tools强制兼容~

  13. I’m using FoxyProxy. Not sure whether it’s better than Gladder or not (Gladder seems to be simpler to use, judging from the screenshots) but it officially supports FF3.

    Works with ff3.0 ,thx a a lot.

  15. the chinesepera addon, my weapon of choice, is not supported yet…

  16. Thanks…..

  17. @troy: I can’t live without the Chinese Pera-kun plugin either, but here’s what I’ve found:

    Hope it helps!

  18. Thanks John for sharing this hacked version. Google is my best companion whenever I run into problems…I was twittering my friends a while ago and said, “Err…I regret to have upgraded to Firefox 3…Gladder not working”

    You’re my Messiah tonight. Cheers!

BTW: you hacked the code yourself? Wow…you’re such a hero!

  19. Thanks for the info Mark, looks like i will be going back to FFX 3 again, soon. (i had to uninstall it after i saw half my plug-ins not supported yet). I can live without most of them, but I need to decipher Chinese youtube comments!

  20. I have been in Beijing for the past week and a half and have had no problems accessing wikipedia…that is, except for the Chinese version.

  21. Gladder is kind of weak. Foxy proxy with tor is better. Its harder to set up but worth it in the long run. It also works with FF3.

  22. Hey John,

Gladder’s home page has a new (?) version that works with Firefox 3. Just tried it out and it seems to be ok.

One question – when I’m logging into wordpress, both gladder and tor have a hard time using proxies with a password. The login site just refreshes. Is this a universal thing or am I supposed to enable some feature?
