My Own Crayon

I’m a bit late in calling attention to this, but it looks like I got my name on a Chinese crayon. Well, a Sinocidal crayon, anyway.

What they call “John Pasden Gator Green” is affectionately (?) referred to by my friends as “Sinosplice Green,” or, to the slightly nerdier, #336633.

I’ve been pondering a redesign lately. I won’t have time to do it until late summer, but I’m thinking… Less green. More white. More space. Wider than 800 pixels.…

Jonathan Yuen: Flash Design with Chinese Style

Jonathan Yuen

Jonathan Yuen . com

Jonathan Yuen has a really cool Flash design site. Check it out; it is totally unannoying, and pleasantly imaginative. It also uses Chinese. Unfortunately, the Chinese characters are small and hard to read, and Flash’s normal zoom option is turned off. So here’s my transcription of the Chinese from the site:

思源
寻找的终点最终依然是起点

创意
能感动人心的才是至高境界

童心
用中庸的心态来审观一切

邂逅
尽管是僵然也应顺其自然

Sorry, no time for a translation now. Try copying and pasting into AdsoTrans. Maybe I’ll get …

Offensive Laowai T-shirts

Chinawhite recently linked to some t-shirts for laowai in China.

Some of the shirts are mildly amusing. I wouldn’t wear any of them. The shirts feature such phrases (in Chinese) as:

  • Here comes a laowai. There goes the laowai.
  • Too expensive!
  • I’m not a laowai, I’m a “foreigner.” [more on this issue]
  • I don’t want a watch. I don’t want DVDs. I don’t want a bag.
  • I will never give you any money. [in

Writing Gospel

Gospel

Recently I bought a new notebook for scratch paper and random notes. I didn’t even glance at what it said on the cover. I just liked that it was lined and spiral bound.

Later as I was scrawling “Scratch Paper” on the cover in big, lazy black letters I discovered the word Gospel boldly staring up at me. In the upper left corner, I read, “Gospel. Faith. Committed.”

Now I feel kind of strange. My random jottings have been elevated …

Photos Moved to Flickr

Ever since Flickr moved its data to servers in the US, I’ve been complaining both online and offline about how maddeningly slow Flickr pages load in China. This weekend, though, Flickr suddenly started loading normally again. Afraid that it wouldn’t last, I immediately did something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while: I moved all my old photo albums onto Flickr. Each photo album became a “set” on Flickr. (You only get unlimited sets if you’ve paid for …

Stylish Antidiarrheal

OK, maybe this is really weird, but I really like the design of this medicine box. It just so happens to be antidiarrheal capsules of the traditional Chinese medicine variety.

If you guys are really good, I’ll even give you an update and let you know how well they work!

Update: They work great!

Chunky Salsa Sinosplice

I got some good feedback on my new layouts, including a request for a Chunky Salsa layout by one Jamie Doom. Greg offered zealous support for this idea. I don’t like to let down friends, so I gave it some serious thought. Jamie then proceeded to create a Chunky Salsa “layout” on his own blog.

Jamie is a man of many talents, but I am sad to say that Chunky Salsa design skillz is just not one …

The New Layout

I am finally finished tweaking the new layout. This is it. In a nutshell, the changes are:

  • Simpler. Fewer images.
  • 2 columns instead of 3. The main column is now wider.
  • Color options! (For future reference, the style switcher is at the bottom of the right column.)

The four styles you have to choose from (click them!) are:

  1. Classic Green (I couldn’t let it go…)
    Style-1
  2. Faded Gator (Homage to my alma mater, I guess?)
    Style-2
  3. Toothpaste on Chocolate
    Style-6
  4. Embers
    Embers

The style …

Retiring this Layout

I’ve been using this blog layout for some time now, and it’s comfortable. I’ve gotten some complaints about the green, but for the most part I ignore them. It’s true that this color doesn’t look good on some people’s monitors, but it looks good on my monitor, and I like it. However, the reasons to change my layout are starting to pile up, so I finally did a redesign, keeping the elements of this design that I like. The new …

Junk Food Review 2

Over the years, one of the most popular features on Sinosplice has been the Junk Food Review that Wilson and I did at ZUCC in 2002. There have been calls for an encore, but since Wilson went back to San Francisco it’s been a little hard to coordinate. Well, the trip to Taipei was a perfect opportunity. Here it is:

Junk Food Review 2

The new design is sort of an experimental “comic book feel” I came up with. The …
