It's gotten pretty cold here, and I got sick again, cause I talk all the time in class and the pollution is bad. Oh yeah and one night I decided to stay up all night for no reason at all. Life in china here is pretty good. The program I am on is pretty good, but it's not really much of a program. It's basically just a way to hook up with a school in China. The orientation was a joke. The things they do for me which are nice is give me back up if I have trouble with the school. Like when the school told me that I should stay in side and not go out, they called and straightened things out. Th also set me up with a pretty nice contract thought the pay is kind of shitty. The one thing I don't like is that compared to the other foriegn teachers that I know, my school is all up in my business. They have good intentions like taking me to tourist attractions and giving me food and making sure I am safe, but I wish they would just leave me alone. It's a pain to have to explain where I am going everytime I don't eat dinner at school and I don't really like the tourists places they like to, I would much rather go with my friends I have made in other places. Teaching in China is a good job, It's pretty easy and the culture is very different from the US. Everybody here wants to learn english so there is a large demand. I am thinking about staying here another year and really learning Chinese. If I stay another year I might move somewhere else and try to get more money. You can get the most money working for private companies but then you have to work a lot of hours, so working for a goverment school is better in my opinion. Anyway if all you want is money you should teach in Japan or Korea. China is probably a little beter than India in terms of sexual harassment, at least thats what I've heard, I'm not a girl so I don't know for sure. ::: posted by Alf at 8:37:23 PM This is brillaint, Buy a playstation II for President Bush ::: posted by Alf at 7:59:02 PM Well i wasn't going to write anything today but then I saw this article in the NYtimes Putin Vows Hunt for Terror Cells Around the World. I think it is one of the reasons I am so lazy and dirty, I just don't care when I'm doing anything or I am living in a shithole, it dosn't piss me off the way it pisses off other people. In china this is good cause shit that would piss other people off dosn't piss me off. Like my toilet seat that vroke the second week I was here, it just didn't bother me that much. Even though it would probably be easy to go out and buy a new one I just squat now, its what the majority of the chinese do anyway. It's the same thing with my bike. the thing is falling apart, the thing that lets you coast dosn't work so half the time I am jsut pedaling but getting no torque on the wheel, the brakes only kind work so its usaully better to dodge obsticles than to sloq dosn and one of the pedals fell off. All my chinese friends say I should bitch to the school to give me a new bike but I think its really funny having this ghetto ass bike and riding around China. I think I underestimated the man in the last election. His recent statements on Iraq have been pretty good and he dosn't sound lik ehe is lieing all the time. He probably looked at Clinton's succes and thought that he would need to emulate the political slimyness that made Clinton so succesful. The problem is that Gore can't lie worth shit, (unlike Bush whose low intellect makes it easy for him to lie). I have always thought that aneroexic girls in earlier times would be considered spirtually song and would become nuns or virgin sacrifices or something. I mean look Siddhartha by Hesse, the guy in it goes into the forest and gets all spiritually pure, and what are his skills when he comes out? he can meditate and fast. It's a sign that our society has advanced that we see fasting as a diesease and not some fucking religous experiance. That being said, fasting does have a certain allure to it, espiacially on lonely, beerless nights like tonight. They like balnd stews with carrtos and chiken or mutton but I on't really like those. They have a lot of eggplnt and strange vegetables but I can't really think of them now. They eat a huge amount of garlic way more thatn in america. Strange things I have eaten would be pig ears and fish eyes. They like to make this strange jello like substance out of sweet potatoe, its allright but too salty. That would be my major complaint about the food it is too salty. I don't eat breakfest, except for some fruit or some yourgurt at my place. The chinese like tp eat a lot of friend stuff and I just don't like it for breakfast. The main meal of the day is lunch, and we will have a few stirfired vegetable dishes. Some boiled meat of some kind and a spicy dish. The chinese like to eat rice porrige but I prefer coka cola. Dinner is basically the same as lunch but smaller. when we are lucky we get noodles or Jiao tze, my favorite. The serve the noddles with a wierd brown meat sauce, it tastes pretty good. I've had lots of wierd run-ins with chinese beuracracy and leadership. Frist I emailed the head of my program in America and told him about the restrictions they put on me. So then he says that sucks and emails the chinese head of my progrma and the chinese head emails the head of my school, and the have an "honest" discussion and so then I get a call that I have another meeting! I go to this meeting and my leader at the school tells me that it was all just a problem in translation. he didn't mean anything that he ssaid it is like when a Chinese parent tells there child to come home early, they don't really mean that, they just want to be safe. I don't really by this, but I figure that since he said not to take anyting he says at face value, now I can do what ever I want, so thats cool. The other wierd thing that is going on is that this women at the international "cofe" (with an accent aigu), wants me to work there, so she is doing all this crazy shit behind the scenes, like talking to the heads of her work departmetna nad the leaders of the city, and she keeps telling me thatmy college is to strict, and I should break the rules, but I think that might just be cause she wants me to go to work for her. But the really wierd thing is that she said she was talking to the had of the communist party at my school and that he said that he didn't want me to get to many friends, espiecially with the high ranking officials in town because "then I would know to much." I don't even know if that is true but if it is its really strange, cause who gives a fuck about what a scrubby apathetic slacker knows about whats going on in a shitty little town in Henan, totally strange if its true. The other thing that is just pissing me off is that I gotta teach this computer aided design class thats over 100 students big just because it is a "national model class," which means the communist gov't thinks it will make them look good to have a bunch of CAD freaks running around. But they suck at speaking english and the class is to big to do anything but lecture in so all I can do is talk at them and have them not understand me, fucking retarded. ::: posted by Alf at 4:45:18 PM Saturday, October 19, 2002 ::: Bored cause I'm still a little sick, and I came up with this little toy to give me hours of fun. This piece by Marc Erikson lays out the short term political implications, I think this paragraoh is particularly true from a geo political perspective Bush has only himself to blame if he now might be called a hypocrite for negotiating with Kim but not Saddam. It was he who lumped them together. But in strategic terms, a Middle East without Saddam is vastly more important than a North Korea without Kim. That won't be said out loud; it's fact nonetheless. It took Washington the better part of two weeks to reach that conclusion. That such a conclusion has in fact been reached will, however, become evident in coming days and weeks. Here is another article by Jim Lobe that contains this intersting point While some reports about Pyongyang's new nuclear program, which is technologically very different from that at Yongbyon, have said it dates back to the mid-1990s, Cumings said he has seen other reports that indicate it began only last July. That would have been shortly after administration hawks had quashed Powell's proposal to send the assistant secretary of state for East Asia, James Kelly, to Pyongyang to end formally the 18-month-old hiatus in high-level talks. [my bold] That means that it was actually the hard stance by the Hawks in the Bush administration that caused N. Korea to start up it's weapons program as a deterrant to american military threat. ::: posted by Alf at 10:54:25 PM Excellent piece by Leon Galindo, about his experiances at the World bank protest in DC. Been that kind of day I guess. I feel a lot better than I did yesterday. The only time I've felt like that before was when I ran my back to back 17, and 20 mile days and then tried to run an 80 mile week. But all I did before yesterday was run 30 minutes at 8 minute pace with this girl I met and then play some badmitton. Of course all the chinese people said I got sick from wearing to little clothing wven though it never got below 70 degrees that day. Speaking of which I have no patience for the chinese today, everything they say seems to piss me off and they just keep calling me and coming over to give me advice on how to get better. Of course I have to go to dinner or else I will be bugged even more. Going to dinner means I will be told that eating some greasy salty chinese food is good for my health and that I need to wear more clothes and respect the fucking elderly when they give me some nasty bread that i didn't ask for. I really have lost all respect for the elderly while here in China. They have cult of the elderly that implies old people are always right because they have had more experiences than young people. But old people can be just as stupid as young people and tend to be more close minded and stuck in their ways. I just really hate doing shit just cause it's a tradition even if its obviosly stupid as hell. I'm not saying old people are all stupid just that given senility it's likely that a higher percentage of them are stupid than the general population. So I'm not gonna kow tow to some fool just cause he's over 60 and has just shoved some nasty been noodles on my plate that i didn't ask for, bitches. ::: posted by Alf at 7:15:50 PM Added description from the brilliant Neal Pollack ::: posted by Alf at 4:49:50 PM I don't really know what to think about North Korea admitting it has Nukes, I don't think it is that much of a surprise. The strange thing is that the North Koreans just up and admitted it. I think there are a couple things to think about in this situation 1. A Nuclear attack by North Korea on any nation should be avoided at all costs. 2. If there is no evidence for an immenient nuclear attack a war against North Korea should be avoided at all costs. So I think that one can't just ignore this situation, but Comments such as this "The disclosure has not ended that debate, said one high-ranking official, who reported that some administration leaders believe "we should go to war tomorrow." " from the article I linked to show a huge lack of respect for life in our current administration. Hopefully we will be able to deal with this like the Cuban missle crisis where everyone realizes that it is in their best intersts. N. Korea has recently been moving towards more a more normal relationship whith the rest of the world, hopefully, the fact that it admitted that it has Nukes is a sign that it wants to become more open. This means unconditional access anywhere, including presidential sites in accordance with a 1998 signed agreement between Iraq and the United Nations an agreement that ensures respect for Iraq's sovereignty and allows for transparency in the work of the inspectors. I'll post some of it here for you lazy bastards But now let's list exactly what we really must forget if we are to support this madness. Most important of all, we absolutely must forget that President Ronald Reagan dispatched a special envoy to meet Saddam Hussein in December 1983. It's essential to forget this for three reasons. Firstly, because the awful Saddam was already using gas against the Iranians which is one of the reasons we are now supposed to go to war with him. Secondly, because the envoy was sent to Iraq to arrange the re-opening of the US embassy in order to secure better trade and economic relations with the Butcher of Baghdad. Thirdly, because the envoy was wait for it Donald Rumsfeld. Now you might think it strange that Mr Rumsfeld, in the course of one of his folksy press conferences, hasn't chatted to us about this interesting tit-bit. You might think he would have wished to enlighten us about the evil nature of the criminal with whom he so warmly shook hands. But no. Strangely, Mr Rumsfeld is silent about this. As he is about his subsequent and equally friendly meeting with Tariq Aziz which just happened to take place on the day in March, 1984, that the UN released its damning report on Saddam's use of poison gas against Iran. The American media are silent about this too, of course. Because we must forget. We must forget, too, that in 1988, as Saddam destroyed the people of Halabja with gas, along with tens of thousands of other Kurds when he "used gas against his own people" in the words of Messrs Bush/Cheney/Blair/Cook/Straw et al President Bush senior provided him with $500m in US government subsidies to buy American farm products. We must forget that in the following year, after Saddam's genocide was complete, President Bush senior doubled this subsidy to $1bn, along with germ seed for anthrax, helicopters, and the notorious "dual-use" material that could be used for chemical and biological weapons. And when President Bush junior promises the Iraqi people "an era of new hope" and democracy after the destruction of Saddam as he did last night we must forget how the Americans promised Pakistan and Afghanistan a new era of hope after the defeat of the Soviet army in 1980 and did nothing. We must forget how President Bush senior urged the Iraqis to rise up against Saddam in 1991 and when they obeyed did nothing. We must forget how America promised a new era of hope to Somalia in 1993 and then, after "Black Hawk Down", abandoned the country. We must forget how President Bush junior promised to "stand by" Afghanistan before he began his bombings last year and has left it now an economic shambles of drug barons, warlords, anarchy and fear. He boasted yesterday that the people of Afghanistan have been "liberated" this after he has failed to catch bin Laden, failed to catch Mullah Omar, and while his troops are coming under daily attack. We must forget, as we listen to the need to reinsert arms inspectors, that the CIA covertly used UN weapons inspectors to spy on Iraq. And of course, we must forget about oil. Indeed, oil is the one commodity and one of the few things which George Bush junior knows something about, along with his ex-oil cronies Cheney and Rice and countless others in the administration which is never mentioned. But the reason the Karzai goverment isn't doing well is that the US is not willing to risk troops by putting peace keepers there to control the country side, not because the country is ruled by a native. It's actaully just an interview about an article you can get in the print version. The main point ofthe article is just to look at the consequesnces of any attack on Iraq. Fallows has been spot on with all his analyisis of iraq so far and I think this qoute is presceint (did I make that word up?) Showdowns, even wars, are sometimes inevitable. John Kennedy had to draw a line with the Soviet Union in 1962. It may eventually become clear that the U.S. has to draw a line by removing Saddam Hussein from power. My purpose in writing this article was to provide a clear-eyed look at exactly what we could expect in those circumstances. It is implicitly an argument for trying other measures first. And it may even be that if we try other measures, including building an alliance and pressing for more effective inspections, we would be in better shape if the alternatives failed and we finally must attack. In that case, we'd be more likely to do it with allies and international legitimacy, which would make the whole aftermath less difficult. ::: posted by Alf at 11:16:08 PM Pretty intersting night here in Xhin Xiang... So I think a good excuse is saying that my contract with my school forbids me from teaching there, so I go and tell her that... But then she pulls this tricky chinese maneveour on me where she knows the head of my school and will try to get my contract renegotiated... It won't be that bad if I teach cause it will give me more friends and some extra spending money. So we get our seats and try to orser the cheapest beers and watch this crazy dude on stage sing shitty pop songs and do filps and stand opn his head on a chair and clap with his feet and down beers in one swill, (all true)... So I'm tinking this scene is hi fucking larious and the german guy is wondering arounding the place saying, halooo to all the nice chinese.... Then the singer is finally done and the normal disco part of 21st centuray begins... So this person comes out and I first it I think it is a irl and the nice chinese girl i am with says, that girl dancing looks so cool... But then i look at her more closely and she is a fucking tranvestite... "She" is a dude wearing fuck me boots, daisy dukes, and a fucking tight blue sequenced shirt that exposes his midriff.... After observing all this i inform the nice chinese girel I am with that it is clearly an many dancing, note the lack of tits or a waist I note... The german agrees with me saying he can see the dudes adam's apple... She dosn't bel;ieve us but then asks the waitress who confirms that it is a dude who is dancing in front.. then me and sonny go down to dance and the floor moves... So all in all I thought it was a surprisingly cool scence for china... i mean they had a f'ing tranvestite cance a dude playing western music some of which was almost cool, (spped up "whoop there it is" to a dance beat).. and the DJ was spitting proto-rap to the audience to get them hyped up... I dug it... edit: Just read this post the morning after and I guess I was drunker than I thought, Oh well, it's still a good post ::: posted by Alf at 12:33:56 AM Saturday, October 12, 2002 ::: Just thought I'd post this as a public service to any folks in the D.C. area. Got thus from MaxSpeak. Hello everyone, As you may already know I have been a SWAT Sniper for about 3 years. My specialty is Counter Sniper for Presidential and dignitary protection. What this basically means is, I am posted at certain locations looking for a sniper/assassin. Once a threat is detected, I am charged in countering his/her ability to attack by early detection and neutralizing (killing) him/her. Now on to business This Sniper killing people in the DC Metro area is a skilled sharpshooter and very calculated. Unfortunately he appears very disturbed and has just left a calling card stating he was God. What that probably means is he may escalate the matter by increasing the rate of killing in each attack because he acknowledges the polices hot pursuit. This sniper knows its a matter of time before he is discovered. He thinks he is superior to everyone, but knows eventually he will be caught. He is playing a very sick game that he feels he is winning. He will probably want to sensationalize his confrontations with the police and eventually stop running and have a standoff. The police may be his future targets. It is very important that you adjust your regular routine because this is a very deadly individual. I am going to give you my personal/professional advice on the matter. The Snipers MO (his methods) are the following. a. 1st wave of attacks were concentrated in an area the suspect was very familiar with. b. It appears these initial attacks were closer, probably less than 100 yards away. Witnesses were hearing loud cracks. c. He definitely is showing off. He is trying to maintain 100 %, one shot for one kill. (Snipers creed). d. He is probably not shooting the first person that appears. He is looking for the highest probable kill. This encompasses distance, position, and movement of the individual and excludes physical barriers (vehicles, tress, columns, etc). e. He is shooting from areas adjacent to major roadways, thoroughfares, highways, etc. (quick egress). First group was within a couple of miles from beltway. Child shot in Bowie was a block away from the US 50 on the 197. f. He went up to northern Virginia (70 miles away) to throw police off his trail (diversion, used by snipers for stalking targets and eluding enemy). g. He is making this to be a giant Stalk around the Metro area. It is a game now. He wants them to come after him (like he is in his own war against the enemy). h. He is probably using any foliage (tree line, woods, bushes) that is around the malls, shopping center, gas stations, and parking lots. i. He is able to shoot accurately out to 500 yards (5 football fields) with or without a scope (depends on individuals abilities). j. The farther out he/she is, the more difficult of course it is to detect or pinpoint location. This aids in egress as well. (He knows this). My advice to you all is to consider the following. 1. Avoid unnecessary errands. 2. Bring someone along. 3. Do not stand outside your vehicle grabbing things out the car. 4. If you go to the store, put items in back seat of car (nothing in trunk) so that you can grab items and exit quickly. 5. When slowing down or at a stop, keep windows closed (glass deflects bullets, he knows this and he is not shooting through glass anymore). 6. Never walk straight to a door more than 20 feet away. Zig zag and walk at angels. The shooter is setting up on doorways/entrances and waiting for victims to line up on entrance. The hardest shot for a sniper is a target traversing laterally to his/her position (perpendicular, see Diag. 1). Diag. 1 Diag. 2 Walk between cars, use them for protection, and NEVER walk in a straight line to a doorway. Park as close as possible. (See Diag. 2) Be mindful of wooded areas and any bushes around establishment. More than likely surrounding areas. Look for reflections (glare of the scope or weapon). Use drive-thru at fast food Look around and make it obvious (looking over your shoulder in the distant) he may hesitate if they think someone notices him. Point to what you are looking at as well. You want to telegraph yourself to others and get them involved. Keep clear of abandoned vehicles, but concern yourself with them. He is probably parking along roads and walking to his shooting position. You are probably safer inside the DC area only because congestion will prevent him an easy egress for the sniper. So if there is a toss up for a store then pick the inner city (not the outer boundaries). The main thing is being careful. Everyone is at risk even the police. He is able to pick the time and place so he has the overall advantage over the police. If you still have difficulty sorting it out, then just stay home (smile). These are just my opinions and hopefully can help in your daily activities. Take care. Now, there has been some talk in Blogland about if this guy is a right or a left wing nut or if we need more or less gun control. I think all these arguments are worthless. When someone decices to go crazy and break the social contract that holds us together, there is just no way of stopping him. Hopefully someone will catch this bastard soon. ::: posted by Alf at 1:15:04 PM Friday, October 11, 2002 ::: I'm feeling sick right now. I have this sinking feeling that the girl I was talking aout in my rant a few posts down, Wang Shu Ping, got into very big troulbe for coming over to see me. I havn't seen her in three days nor have I seen any of her friends. I was talking to some students at "english corner" and one her classmates made this odd comment about a girl named Nancy leaving school. Shu Ping's english name was Kathy, but Nancy and Kathy sound alike, espieacially to a chinese person, (both are two sylablles and have the same vowel sounds). I will feel horrible if this girls life is ruined just because i failed to follow Chinese etiquette. If she has been expelled I might have to leave the campus in a big public protest. This shit just really pisses me off. It's not even about me anymore, I really feel disgusted over the whole affair. It's not like I was in love with the girl, somehow her being hurt just cuts to the heart of my morality.... Isn't that shit gonna start soon... the internet is getting boring. ::: posted by Alf at 12:16:01 AM Saw a bit of the dark side of China today. I had a meeting with the head of the foriegn affairs department today and it went a little something like this. Fisrt he tells me I'm doing a fine job, bla bla bla, but I'm a new teacher so he will give me some advice. Then he tells me some more bullshit about how I should respect the elderly and allways say thankyou. I'm sitting there wondering if this talk is all bullshit or if he is actually gonna tell me something substantial. Just when I think I'm going to get off with easy he drops what the talk is really about. Me being a teacher, (and of course they respect me so much as an equal) and a representitive of The U S of A (like telling me that will change my behavoir), I need to adher to certain codes of conduct. Then he lays down the basic rules that all teachers in the college supposedly live by. Such as not drinking alcohol and staying in at night and not having any guests over past 8:00. This, of course, is pissing me off but I just nod and smile. He then tells me what i've been expecting, that there is a female student that's been coming over to my room and that unnaccepable. Though his words were much nicer than that, so we could all save face. He then tells me some more rules, like students shouldn't stay over at my place past, 8:00 pm and that i should stay in my room at night working on my lesson plans. I'm getting really pissed cause these rules are just ridicoulous. It takes me an hour at most to plan for my lessons and if I can't go out at night then the only people i can hang out with are students. So basically he was condemning me to the internet. He then adds that I should go avoid going out by myself and I should tell him of all my plans, for my safety of course. All this makes me want to disrespect the fuck out of some old people. To some extent I knew I was bring this on myself. The primary incident that caused this crack down was peobably Wang Shu Ping, the girl who has a crush on me (though I think there were other things as well, such as going to Shao Lin by myself, not knowing makes it rather scary). Shu Ping, called me up on Autum moon festival and said she had mooncakes to give me as is traditional. So she came over that night and gave me some moocakes and we had a nice talk. I could tell right away that she had a crush on me and that if I want to I would've been able to make out with her that night. But I knew she was my student and we were in China so I held back. She then came over a couple other times, usaully at night because during the day she had class. I knew that it probably wasn't appropriate for her to be with me alone, but the latest she stayed at my house was 10:30 and all we did was talk. Once she took me out to dinner at a relatives restuarent. Actaully the more I write this the more I realise how unjust this crackdown is. First of all they encourged me to talk with the students and undoubtly I helped Shu Ping with her english. Just because the mere apperiance of a an indescretion, basically all students are forbidden from having meaningful interaction with me. IThe worst part is, I am pretty sure that Shu Ping got in trouble because of this and had to pay a fine. Thats such bullshit, though I admire her for her bravery in coming to talk to me even when she knew it was innappropriate. I hope she lets me pay any fine she got. Along with that, all my students were probably given a talk to about what kind of contact with me is acceptable. The administration can suck my hairy fucking balls. Of course the whole time they were telling me this, it was filled with the fake chinese laughter and smiles that were meant to save face. I wonder what would have happened if I had gotten angery? All these knew rules just mean that I am going to lie more to the administration, try to make more friends outside of the school and ignore the rules about how late I can stay out and going out alone. Hopefully, if I try to keep up the appearence of complying that will be good enough. It's obvious from this episode that appereance is very important. If that dosn't work, I'll just flip out. that will be another good learning experiance. At least I have a good exit strategy in case I want to leave: Hook up with a Chinese girl and cause a scandal. Fucking chinese don't know what a contray motherfucker they are messing with.... Thats all i'm gonna write for now but I think I will post another one tommorow about uncertainty of the informers fuck institutions in general trust ::: posted by Alf at 12:14:50 AM Tuesday, October 08, 2002 ::: Article in the new york times about evolutionary psychology and jealousy. It's pretty intersting in that it reports that many psychologists are experimentally debunking the claims of evolutionary psychology. Personally I think evolutionary psychology isl argely a pseudo -science which makes claims that cannot be tested. This article provides good evidence for that, for instance this qoute by the Evolutionary psychologist, Dr. Buss "These authors take a kind of rigid, robotic, stereotypic and false depiction of the evolutionary hypothesis and then show that those robotic depictions are wrong," Dr. Buss said. "I could develop any number of contexts in which you could make the sex differences in jealousy disappear; the fact that you could create a laboratory experiment in which you do so is, in my view, a meaningless and trivial demonstration." Sorry, Dr. Buss when you make a scientific hypothesis it needs to be rigid. If it isn't there is no way to tell if the experiment confirmed or disproved it. If evolutionary psychology is proposing that jealousy just kinda has a genetic basis, that isn't a scientific claim. The evolutionary psychologists seem to take a rather grandiose view of their discipline, Dr. Buss again, People have always been resistant to evolution," he said. "We're in the midst of a scientific revolution in the field of psychology." "It took 400 years for the Catholic church to forgive Galileo," he added. "Will it take longer for this? I don't know, but it's going to happen." Umm, well scince about zero useful findings have been made by people who call themselves, "evolutionary psychologists," I don't think it will ever happen. This isn't to say that evolutionary theroies have no place in psychology, it's just that the way mainstream evolutionary psychologists apply them is useless. It is impossible to determine if complex human behavoir like sexual versus emotional jealousy have an evolutionary basis, therefore any claims made about them are mere speculation and do not add up to a science. If you can't tell I really don't like evolutionary psychologists. ::: posted by Alf at 6:45:36 PM Monday, October 07, 2002 ::: We have requests for procrastination material from mary... so here it is, hopefully the link will work too... ::: posted by Alf at 11:25:20 PM I wonder if the 0 people who read this blog would appreciate it if I spell checked my posts first? I went to this swanky western style cafe which was cool and I'll write more about it below, but this dude tried to sell me some life insurance, how fucking lame is that. Then my wanna be best friend from the english department here at school comes over to annoy me for two hours tonight. I know the guys intentions are good, but he is just so lame. I'm just sick of the dude. Second, almost none of these losers are girls. I know this may be because I'm a hetrosexaul guy, but I think there is more to it than that. Chinese guys jsut give me very strange vibes. They always get up in my personnel space. There something more there but I can't quite put my finger on it. Actually there is something about all of China that strikes me as a little off, at least to me. Something about the way they value succes as a way to help society. The way nothing is Ironic. the value of family. There's nothing outright wrong about these things, they just kind of make me feel uncomfortable. They like their country way to much. One more thing about the women here, While I find them very attractive I don't really like the one on TV. It's not that the girls they put up their don't look good, (as opposed to the western girls who look like they are pulled off the street). Its that they have a strange sexless and icyness to them. I find the same thing with your sterotypical Nordic beauty. It's not that I wouldn't want to have sex with these girls, I just wouldn't want to talk them after words, and thats just not right... ::: posted by Alf at 10:15:32 PM Stupid article in the Washington Post about the military costs of the Iraqi war. His main contention comes from these paragraghs. Why does anyone buy this nonsense? We have learned a great deal about U.S. military capabilities in the past decade. When U.S. intelligence finds a target worth attacking, the military can attack it with precision weaponry, pretty much regardless of location, and still minimize harm to surrounding civilians. What is more, if the target is indeed a weapon of mass destruction or Saddam himself, the law of war allows for attack even if there is danger to civilians, so long as the civilian harm is not disproportionate to the military gain. Does anyone doubt that President Bush is going to hold back this time? Second, the Iraqis aren't prepared or capable to carry out their threats. Sure, the regime will hide behind the civilian population, but not the Iraqi military. Saddam's legions are not formed around Western military notions of leadership or decentralized decision-making. Such initiative and self-confidence is required for urban combat or guerilla warfare. There are special units and security organizations that are entrusted with survival of the regime, but most of the hundreds of thousands of normal Iraqi troops are conscripts assigned to regular army units intentionally formed into tightly controlled and widely dispersed organizations that are kept under close watch far away from Baghdad to ensure that they do not rise up against the central government. Military training in the sense of how we think about it, being able to maneuver on the ground, is non-existent. But the past decades don't support these two conclusions at all. In the past decade we have been militarily because he have relied on air power alone with an enemy easy to see in the desert (desert storm I) or have had to rely on local ground forces to help with fighting and targeting (Kosovo and Afghanistan). The targeting part is very important, in Afghanistan one reason our air attacks were so succesful was because he had Special Ops on the ground targeting the taliban's forces. In order to get good inteeligence about iraqi military positions in Bahgdad we will need to have people in Bahgdad. The author acts like Saddam will not keep any military presence in Bahgdad, thats just a n absurd assertion. Surely his "elite" republican gaurd have more to lose than most by seeing Saddam overthrown and will be loyal enough to stay in bahgdad to protect Saddam. The history of urban warfare in the past ten years does not look so good for the US military. We couldn't hack it in Somolia and Isreal's technological advantage looks much smaller when they have to house to house. We will probably win a war with Iraq but it will come with very large Iraqi deaths and significant american ones. to play these down is very irresponsible. ::: posted by Alf at 1:44:16 PM God Damn whats up with my boys down in South Bend. I've always liked Hitchens, he writes an elegant british style that puts american writers to shame and he's not afraid to say what he wants. But I have to disagree with his current stance on Iraq. I was with him when he critisiced the far left for being against intervention in Afgahnistan but I do not think that the same arguments can be used for Iraq. In the left he has been heavily criticized, obviously by people who haven't read very much of his stuff. They ijmply that he is a mere mouth peace for the Bushies. however his stance on Iraq is fairly consistent with past stances and is actually a pretty mundane center/center-left pro war argument from moral grounds. What gets Hitchens into trouble this time is what has gotten him into trouble in the past. He latches on to an issue, cuts it two the moral core and usually ends up on the right side. However, when he does this he blinds himself to other related issues. In his critisicm of Clinton he goes from a very good attack on clintons political slipperness to claiming that Clinotn is a rapist. Claims like this just make you look like a wacko. On Iraq, his pro war stance, goes along with his history of being against dictaors and after reading his articles you feel that he truly believes that a war will help the Iraqi people. i think that he fails to see the larger picture of the effects of the war and drastically overestimates the willingness of the Bush adminstration to put in the effort to make a post Saddam iraq Stable. He does offer up some important questions. Leftist oppenents of the war often offer arguments that sound similar to Kissinger like Realism. The biggest one of these is that Invading Iraq and setting up an independant Kurdistan is unnacceptable because it would piss off Turkey. But don't the Kurd's deserve their own state? Shouldn't we be strong enough to stand up to Turkey and tell them to accept this Kurdish state? A leftist who respects self determination and democracy would have to say yes to these questions. I'm not so sure a little realism is always a bad thing. One only has so much politcal capitol, but thats a different post. ::: posted by Alf at 8:55:29 PM Au yeeeah, I'm in google. Too soon to stop thinking: the view from Iraq is written by Faleh A. Jabar, an Iraqi middle east expert working in England. It is so good because it provides an answer to the question of "what else can we do besides invade Iraq?" so often posed by pro war types. The article lays out how Saddam entrenched his power. Basically a combination of gaining hte support of the wealthy, the local clan system and the military. Jabar proposes that the best way to defeat Saddam is to start cutting apart this web of relations, as he says, "In all the decades of struggle and international lobbying, one approach has never been tried: a meaningful political process to disengage the various components of the regime from each other." I really believe that it would be possible to take Saddam out of power without a full scale invasion. Perhaps we would need to use troopps establish a Shi'ite area in the south similar to the Kurdish area in the north but that would be much easier and less dangerous than a full scale invasion. From that postion Saddam would be surronded by enemies and it would be easier to try and cut the ties he has to power with non-military means. ::: posted by Alf at 5:39:37 PM Went to Shao Lin Si yesterday, it was definitly the best temple I have been to, though I'm not sure how many more I want to go to since they all look the same. The coolest part about Shao Lin was definitly the Kung Fu. We went to see a show by the monks, that was pretty kick ass. All the dudes in the show looked like they were under 15, but in general the chinese look three years younger than they actually are, so its hard to say. The hd little kids doing the basic forms, they probably could have kicked my ass. Then they hand a dude who was good at Iron Head technique. Basically he based a lot of stuff on his head. They had one guy that could throw toothpick so they stuck in glass. They had dudes doing the different animal stances. Monkey style was definitly the best. After the show we hiked up to the top of the mountains around Shao Lin, it was an easy hike and hopefully I got some good pictures. I should say that I was travelling with another foriegn teacher from my city, Stan, a polish guy. In Shao Lin we met two girls, on eenglish and one russian, so we had an international travelling party. We stayed in a hostel that was behind one of the Kung Fu schools in town. All the kids got up in the morning and started practicing it was impressive. I would walk through the schools and on wone side there would be kids practicing with swords and on the other some dudes kicking each other. Today there was a decent article in the New York Times debating whether when babies babble it is the beginning of language. Just from working with songbirds, I feel that it is almost certain that babbling is an important part of a motor auditory feedback loop that helps to learn how to speak. I didnt think anybody would dispute this but they drag out a couple people that say things like the brain is a general purpose device for acquiring culture, technology and language. Is that statement as absurd as I think it is? This same person, Dr. Elizabeth Bates, then says, The left hemisphere is also more responsive to complex auditory stimuli, not just speech but rapid tone sequences. This is supposed to be an argument against the left-brain being the language center, but again going back to songbirds, learned vocalizations require interaction between complex auditory stimuli and complex vocalizations. So this statement actually supports the opposite of what it is supposed to. The article then goes on to make some other mundane points like vocalization is not central to language because of sign language (Update, rereading the article, I realise it's not that mundane a point but it is still misrepresented i feel), but it never really pulls the research together to show a coherent picture. Sorry for the rant, I just get pissed off at bad neuroscience writing. Edit: Allright I read the article again and I have more specific complaints. The experiment in question showed that their is a corellation between that left side of the brain and babbling. Since it is well established that the left side of the brain is involved in language, along with the extreme liklyhood of a vocalisation/auditory feedback loop in learning language, it wouldn't be improper to say that babbling is a step in the language process. However the people arguing against that conclusion claim that this cannot be the case because babies have no specialised langauge areas in the brain. Through the magic of imitation and socialization, the brain becomes specialized later in life. Besides ignoring the need for a vocalisation/auditory feedback loop, they have a very strange definition of specialised. It is only when a system is fully functional thta it becomes specialised for a certain task. This is ridiculous, everybody knows that the nervous system needs the proper inputs in order for its various systems to develop correctly; the best studied specialised system is probably the visual system. The absurdity of these claims makes me doubt that the reporter was accuratly portraying the two sides. ::: posted by Alf at 10:04:45 PM I can't believe Katherine Harris is going to be Queen of America.
