Busty Models Get Men Thinking… about what now?

If you’ve ever seen a “men’s magazine” like FHM or Maxim, you know that one of the main staples is “interviews” with buxom young females. In these multi-page features photographs figure prominently, words are squeezed in at the sides, and key quotations are carefully selected and displayed in big type next to the photographs. These quotations are usually sex-related, designed to get the reader’s pulse racing. (If you really need examples of this, you might try taking a look at NSFW-1 or NSFW-2.)

I haven’t really taken a look at the Chinese equivalents of these magazines, but I recently chanced upon the following picture of Chinese model 陈馨婷 (Chén Xīntíng):

陈馨婷 (Chén Xīntíng)

The quote says:

> 我很期待穿婚纱的感觉。 (Wǒ hěn qīdài chuān hūnshā de gǎnjué.)

which might be (a bit awkwardly) translated as:

> I’m really looking forward to the feeling of wearing a wedding dress.

That funny feeling you’re left with is a special brand of men’s magazine culture shock. Maybe.

  1. Hearing that a woman wants to be wearing a wedding dress is not a big ‘turn on’ for a man. Hearing that wouldn’t make my pulse race. If I initially heard someone say that, then my initial response would be “Run Away!!!”. In my opinioin, I think men would prefer to hear that she wants to wear Lingerie for that special man.

  2. Why can I never meet busty Chinese girls?

  3. well, in china aren’t wives more like property than in western society? maybe i’m attributing past attitudes to present day china, but i know that attitudes about women are very different there. i guess i’m thinking that “owning” a busty wife would be prestigious the way owning a fancy car can be.

  4. I’d hit it.

  5. it is said that Playboy will soon release a mainland-China edition? lol

  6. I haven’t really taken a look at the Chinese equivalents of these magazines

Really? I guess that’s what we all say though. When my significant other finds these magazines around the apartment, I always respond with something similar:

I just buy it for the magazines

    or

I’m brushing up on my HanZi with ‘motivational’ study material.

  7. Thought: “busty?”

    Thought: “Oh, right.”

  8. I think that Amy was alluding to the concept of the “trophy wife”; think “Michael Douglas/Catherine Zeta-Jones”.

  9. You’d think that women’s magazines would have pictures of men all over them, but luck for us guys, they’re covered with scantly clad women, too!

  10. 36-24-34.

  11. Women are bisexual. On the subway, guys check out the girl sitting across from them. Girls, on the other hand, check out the girl sitting across from them. Cool!

  12. Thoughts? I seem to have lost any thoughts I had once I reached the photo.

BTW, how do you type in pinyin with tone marks?

Maybe she’s tired of being ogled by horny guys and wants to settle down?

  14. John, did your site’s hit count need a boost?

    🙂

(Just kidding, sexuality in China is definitely worth researching and debating, if for no other reason than to dispel some of the myths that so many people outside China — and even a lot of Chinese themselves — hold so dear).

  15. You should create a new tag called “Skinosplice.”

  16. In this photo she looks a lot like the Japanese model Reon Kaneda.

  17. Todd and Matt,

I’ll have to admit, I have experimented briefly with certain types of content to see if traffic increases, but I’ve found that the occasional post really doesn’t do anything (unless it were to be widely linked to). So in this case, it’s just something I felt like posting about. 🙂

(Matt: Naw, but check out Skinhua.)

  18. John,

Maybe your experiments just haven’t been extensive enough 🙂

And yea, that was sort of meant to be a riff on “skinhua,” which I think first entered the lexicon via Danwei.org.
